Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz, recognised for its distinctive apple-green to mint-green colour. Unlike many green gemstones, its colour comes naturally from small traces of nickel within the stone rather than artificial treatment.
Because every chrysoprase forms naturally over millions of years, no two stones are exactly alike. Some display a soft, milky green, while others reveal deeper, richer shades, giving each piece its own unique character.
The finest chrysoprase has traditionally been sourced from Australia, although deposits are also found in Poland, Brazil, Tanzania, Russia and the United States.
Its name comes from the Greek words chrysos (gold) and prason (leek), referring to its distinctive yellow-green colour.
